Decrease disease incidence in the periparturient dairy cow with Torch Vets’ Vital 90 Days initiative

The ‘Vital 90 Days’ are the 60 days before calving and around 30 days after calving. The period from drying off through calving to lactation is a high risk time for the dairy cow and can be some of the most stressful days in the cow calendar.

Torch Farm Vets are working with Elanco Animal Health to provide the Vital 90 Days service looking at key risk factors and challenges during this period, including immune function and energy balance to decrease disease incidence and increase productivity.

We also look at:

  • Housing, including design and comfort

  • Cow factors such as body condition score (BCS) and mobility scores

  • Nutrition, feed quality and water access

There are three tiers available, each with different levels of involvement:

TtL1: Healthy start checklist

A vet tech visit to complete an assessment looking at environment, nutrition and management practices (approx. 90 minutes)

TtL2: Healthy start checklist & blood samples

As above plus energy profiling via blood samples

TtL3: Healthy start checklist, blood samples & rumenocentesis

As above plus thorough assessment of dry cows and fresh calvers and rumen sampling with extensive vet report.

At the end of these visits your vet will report back to you indentifying key areas for improvement and focus. There is also an option for a follow up review to monitor success and progression.

It is our aim to work as part of your team of advisors to ensure good quality healthcare that is value for money.
