Now for the fun bit to help weight loss – exercise!
Exercise will increase energy usage and greatly speed up weight loss. However, for an overweight and unfit horse, levels of activity must increase gradually to prevent unnecessary strain on an already burdened body. Always check that your horse isn’t lame before pushing him on.
Brisk walking and steady trotting are the best gaits to burn fat stores so the non-ridden horse should be taken out for active walks or put on the lunge or walker if safe to do so.
For ridden horses, encourage active walking even when out hacking. Riding more often will make both you and your horse fitter! If you can’t increase the frequency of riding, aim to ride and trot just that little bit longer the next time you get out. Working towards an event or fun ride can give extra motivation.
Spring is just around the corner so it’s time to get moving!
